Our May/June 2006 cover story: "Living in an Amish Paradise?" inspired many comments. While the overwhelming majority of these comments were positive, a few felt we had misrepresented the Amish. Here is an example, along with our answer, as well as our good friend Joe Keim's. Joe is executive director of Mission to Amish People (MAP) whose audio interview is available on the previous page.

Living in an Amish Paradise?

I am disappointed with the factual content [in the May/June article about the Amish] and in particular your broadcast interview with Joe Keim. You have done exactly what you have accused others of doing—painting all of the Amish under one brush. There are many different types of “plain people,” from those who have machinery to those who don't; from the very legalistic to the cavalier.

The statement that Amish do not buy items at Wal-Mart is ridiculous. I have personally shopped with many different Amish families at Wal-Mart, buying all types of things. Amish do not necessarily connect the Ordnung (or their rules of living) with salvation—rather they see the Ordnung as the common basis for their culture, a means to control the world's encroachments on their lives. Furthermore, the Ordnung is interpreted differently by the different groups. The Amish decision to remove themselves from society is a cultural choice, not a biblical one.

• We will send your comment to Joe Keim for his answers to your questions. Our perspective for both the article and the interview which was posted on our website is that salvation is by grace alone, faith alone and Christ alone. Given that biblical perspective, and knowing the history of Anabaptism and of the current Amish beliefs and lifestyle, we find that there are major inconsistencies between their rules/regulations/expectations and the gospel of Jesus Christ. —The Editors

From Joe Keim:

I understand the perspective of the writer. From time to time I receive harsh emails from people concerning our ministry. I have had people curse me for meddling with what they considered to be the greatest people group alive. Here are my thoughts about the writer's comments:
1) The writer may know a great deal about the Amish in his home area, but he was not born and raised in an Amish family.
2) What the writer says about the Amish not all being on the same level is true—there are probably 15-25 different denominations/orders that have exploded out of the original movement. For example, the Swartzentruber and Andy Yoder sects/orders are easily the most legalistic groups of all. From there you have the Old, Old Order, the King Order, the New Order and eventually you come to the Beechy Order or sometimes called the Sunday School Amish. The differences between most of these orders are great enough that they will not fellowship or inter-marry with each other.

But, they ALL have one thing in common and that is they follow an ordinance that spells out the dos and don'ts of their order. The Beechy Amish are considered to be the most liberal group of all, and yet even they follow their own man-made rule book (ordinance letter). For instance, they are allowed to drive cars, but their rule book says that they are not allowed to buy a car newer than two years old, and within six months they have to paint the car black, including the bumpers.

I have two letters that have circulated in the Amish communities for years. One represents itself as a letter from God about what will happen to those who break the Sabbath and another purports to be from a woman who married and left the Amish, but later in life she is tormented by her conscience. (Editor's note: Readers may read these two letters posted on our website at www.ptm.org/amish and if you have not already, you may wish to listen to our audio interview with Joe Keim).

God's grace.

A Wonderful Letter From God

Printed in letters of gold and dropped by an Angel, near the city of Madgesburg in Europe, where it was found. Whosoever desires to copy it is permitted to do so and whosoever despises it from him, we shall withdraw ourselves.

THE LETTER READS AS FOLLOWS:
Whosoever labors on the Lords day or Sunday is accursed for this reason. I command that ye do not labor on Sunday, but reverently go to church and do not adorn your faces. You shall not wear false hair and practice pride and vanity of your treasure. Ye shall give to the poor. Give abundantly and have faith and believe that this letter was written with my own hand and sent out from Christ himself. And that ye do not as the unconscious Brutes. Ye have six days in the week and in these ye shall do your work. But the seventh day, namely Sunday, ye shall keep holy. If ye will not do this then I will send wars, hunger, pestilence and famine amongst you. And I will punish you with many plagues. I also command you all, whosoever ye may be, young or old, great or small, that ye do not at any time work late on Saturday. But ye shall morn over your sins that be forgiven you. Do not count silver or gold. Do not give away to lust of the flesh or to your carnal desires. Remember that I created you and that I can again destroy you. Do not rejoice in poverty of your neighbors, but much more have compassion on him, and it shall be well with you. Children obey Father and Mother that it will be well with you upon earth. Whosoever does not believe and do this is condemned and lost. I, Jesus, have written this with my own hand. Whosoever shall oppose and despise it, that same person may not expect any help from me. And whosoever has this letter and who does not reveal or publish it to others shall be accursed by the Christian Church. If your sins be ever so great, they shall never the less be forgiven you. If you sincerely morn over them and repent of them. He that does not believe this shall die and be punished in Hell at the judgment day. I will ask you about your sins and you will have to answer me. The person who shall carry this letter with him or keep it in his house shall not be harmed by thunder or lightning, shall be secured from fire or floods, and he that shall make it known among the children of men shall have his reward and shall have a blessed and peaceful departure from this world. Keep my commandments which I have sent by my Angel.

The True God From Heaven's Throne.

A Former Amish Daughter Looks Back with Regret

Dear Father and Mother,

Well I don't know how to begin but I've been wanting to write you for so long and never had the courage. I should have written you sooner but I knew how much it was going to hurt after what I've done to you so I thought I'd put off writing as long as I could stand it.

You don't know how hard it is for me to write this letter but I have to do it sooner or later. My husband keeps after me all the time to write you, but it hurts.

I have sinned and don't know if God ever forgives for what I've done. I know I have done a terrible, terrible wrong to come out here and leave my home and church and get married, but I did and I guess there is nothing left for me to do but ask you and God for forgiveness.

My conscience bothers me day and night and I'll probably take it to the grave with me. There isn't one day of the year that I don't think of you, Mother and Father, and I'm terribly sorry for what I have done but that don't change things. I was afraid if I wrote and told you, it would hurt you so, it would kill you.

If I could do it all over I would be back there helping you all and have my feet under your table but it is too late now. Of course, I have nobody in the world to blame but myself. You taught us children right from wrong and it seems we accept wrong.

I'm crying as I write this letter and it sure hurts me. I say my prayers every night when I go to bed hoping God will hear me.

OH how terrible! Please, OH please, forgive me folks, and pray for me.
