Question: .

Is your ministry dealing with the "GIFTS of the Spirit"?

Malcom

Answer:

Dear Malcom,

1) Plain Truth Ministries is non-charismatic. That is, we do not encourage speaking in tongues.

2) However, we are not anti-speaking in tongues. That is, we recognize tongues as a biblical gift (Paul - "I speak in tongues more than you all" -- 1 Corinthians 14:8). Therefore, if tongues speaking is conducted within those guidelines that Paul gives, we do not condemn them, neither do we encourage them.

3) Some believe that speaking in tongues are the sign of a "second blessing" or "deeper conversion" or "the real sign of being born again," etc. We do not agree, for there is not biblical proof of this. Such teaching and practice tends to divide the body of Christ, and "puff up" those who have this gift.

4) We believe, in a broader way, that the gifts of the spirit, according to the several New Testament passages, are very much a part of the body of Christ today. We believe in the priesthood of all believers, and that God gifts individuals as it pleases him. Therefore, the local church, as well as the church universal, is not simply led by a professional "priesthood," but is supported, led, helped, and moved forward by the many spirit led Christians who are gifted in a variety of ways.

5) Gifts should not be subjectively determined (i.e. "I believe that I have the gift of prophecy") - for such determinations are just that - subjective - and prone to misunderstanding. We do not possess gifts that we desire, but we are given, by God's grace, those gifts that he determines. Many Christians make the mistake that they have a gift when in fact they simply see themselves as having that gift. Gifts that a Christian has are best determined, encouraged, and supported by fellow Christians who note that gift in the life of a fellow believer.

6) Individual denominations, and congregations still maintain order and decorum in a variety of governmental structures that are biblically acceptable. Gifts that the Christian has will find a place, sometimes over a period of time, in a healthy, well-balanced church, but will generally find that place in an acceptable way -- rather than a contentious, demanding, presumptuous way.

A very brief overview -- much, much more can be said. Hope this helps you.

In Christ,

Greg Albrecht
