Question: .
Could you please explain what 1 Thess. 5:19 means about quenching the spirit? (KJV) Some other versions don't use "quench", and seem to give it a different meaning. I'm not really sure if I understand it correctly to begin with. Thanks for your help, Mr. Albrecht!

Answer:
Dear Wayne,
This passage occurs within the context of a number of short, terse exhortations - all appearing to center around public worship - i.e. church services.
In this light, this passage would appear to mean that we should not disregard the inspiration that God the Holy Spirit will give us, particularly in worship services. Church services is one time that God can touch our heart, and we need to listen to him - not disregard what is happening as a church service "high."
NIV renders this "Do not put out the Spirit's fire" - with obvious reference to the work of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 - the tongues of fire. The Holy Spirit moves within believers, inspiring, motivating, giving insights, etc. We should not disregard the work of the Holy Spirit.
Hope this helps.
In Christ,
Greg Albrecht
