Question:

I have a friend who I haven’t seen around our church for a while .

I found out that he got married to a Jehovah’s Witness and is now going to their church. He is an intelligent person. Do you have any words of advice on how to reach him? I do not know much about the JWs, other than they are a cult -- also known as the Watchtower Society.

Edward

Answer: Dear Edward,

Unfortunately, it is my experience that intelligence is no safeguard to falling for heretical notions and claims. It also appears that your friend has the added pressure of marriage – which it seems caused him to make this decision in the first place.

The major area that Jehovah’s Witnesses disclaim, and is their major weakness (of many – but this one is the watershed) is the Trinity. They prooftext many passages, they accept the ancient heresy of Arius (Arianism), and they even have their own "translation" which has been prepared to mask/hide the divinity of Jesus.

One of the best and most practical books I know of that answers the prooftexts that Jehovah’s Witnessess use is by Robert M. Bowman, Jr. – it is published by Baker Books, Why You Should Believe in the Trinity – An Answer to Jehovah’s Witnesses.

If you are able, over time, to engage your friend in rational, logical, and biblically based discussion, this book will be of great help.

In Christ,

Greg Albrecht
