Question: Did God create the dinosaurs? Were they created at the same time as the other animals in Genesis, or at an earlier time?

Answer: Dear John,

Scientific evidence indicates that the dinosaurs were created earlier than the animals described in the early chapters of Genesis. There are several ways to reconcile this apparent discrepancy – some believe that Genesis 1:1 describes the original creation – perhaps hundreds of millions of years ago, and verse two describes destruction, perhaps that caused by the rebellion of Lucifer. Then verse three describes "re-creation" – this is called the gap theory.

Others do not necessarily agree with the gap theory, but believe that Genesis does not claim that there was not a universe and animal life before this account – and that God is simply giving us the beginning of human life and history on earth in this account.

In any case, there does not seem to be any reasonable way to demonstrate that dinosaurs have only been on earth as long as human life – several disciplines of science would debate that.
