Question:

Was Judas forgiven for betraying Jesus? I may be wrong but I think that he was. First of all -- I believe that because God is love. Second, the betrayal had a purpose. Third, Judas regretted his actions and showed remorse. He wasn’t proud of what he did. He tried to give the betrayal money back, but they wouldn’t accept it. He ended up killing himself, probably out of frustration and shame. Fourth, God doesn’t need anyone’s protection against the ways of man. Rather, it’s you and I who need his protection against the ways of man -- meaning that whatever wrong Judas has done, God is the ultimate judge.

While Scriptures doesn’t clearly say that he repented, I think his words and actions indicate that he did. What do you think?

Answer:

I believe that the direction of your thoughts is biblically sound. However, the fact remains that the Bible dos not speak specifically to this question. Our best efforts will, at the end of the day, simply be speculation. And, isn’t that a blessing? For when we see the flawed and pitiful attempts at justice we humans have recorded in history, we can rest secure that our loving God is the ultimate judge, and that we are all in his loving and forgiving hands.

In Christ,
