Question: Who is the father of Jesus? Jesus said God was his father but Matthew 1:20 says the Holy Spirit is his father.
Mike
Answer: Dear Mike,
The Bible reveals that there is one God who is three eternally existent co-essential yet distinct persons. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The birth of Jesus was unique, as God came to us in the person of Jesus for our salvation. Jesus was very man and very God. He "continued" to be God, but became human, enfleshing his divinity. Jesus the man was fathered by God, specifically the agency of the Holy Spirit who overshadowed Mary.
There is only one God that is the absolute and continuous claim of the Bible and it is one of the distinctions of Christianity. Judaism and Islam are also monotheistic, with other world religions often classified as pagan by virtue of their "poly-theism". God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are not three Gods, they are one God, who exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Hope this helps.
In Christ,
Greg Albrecht
