Question: Could you help me understand why the book of Exodus (Exodus 21) provides instructions regarding slavery? I’m confused since I know God opposes slavery.

Mario

Answer: Dear Mario,

Slavery is unbiblical and unethical. In fact, the application of biblical principles, and highly motivated Christians led to the overthrow of slavery. While the old covenant law dealt with the reality of slavery in that culture, the law demanded that slaves eventually be set free (Ex. 21:2). Ultimately, it was the cross that finally broke down all social barriers, castes, and classes that enable practices that culminate in slavery. While the societal overthrow of slavery did not happen "in Bible times" the Bible forms the basis of that overthrow.

Hope this helps.

In Christ,
