Question: Hello Greg,
Could you explain the context of 1 John 2:4 and which commandments the apostle was referring to?
Thanks,
Jonathan
Answer: Dear Jonathan,
I can only assume that you are thinking that when the word "commandments" is used in 1 John that we can insert the number "10" immediately before them. But a study of 1 John will show that such an insertion does violence to the words and meaning God has inspired. The commandments that John has reference to are the new commandments of Jesus, given by him, based upon the old covenant, but commandments that do not have the same old covenant requirement in the light of the cross and the empty tomb. You might try reading and studying 1 John, noting each mention of "commandment" and then nothing the context.
Hope this helps your study.
In Christ,
Greg Albrecht
