Question: Dear Greg,

I was under the impression that Matthew’s gospel was the earliest, followed by Mark, Luke and John. Some recent reading indicates that perhaps Mark’s gospel was first. Can you comment on this?

Answer: Hello, Dave,

Good to talk with you again. The idea that Matthew was the first Gospel that was written is an older and now archaic view. Mark’s Gospel is almost universally accepted as the Gospel that was written first. We printed a series of four articles on the Gospels in the Plain Truth, beginning with the May/June 1998 issue, and ending with November/December 1998 – Mark is in the July/August issue, - all are posted on our website.
