Question: Dear Greg,

This is the first time I have been to your site, but I found it very exciting. I have a question for you. Is it breaking the 2nd commandment to have pictures or other objects representing Jesus Christ in our homes? Should we be focusing upon more what Jesus Christ looks like today according to Revelation 1:13-16?

I hope you can help me to understand. Thanking you in advance for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Beverly

Answer: Dear Beverly,

Welcome to the PTM website! We hope that you will be a regular visitor, and that you will be refreshed and nourished by our media ministry.

There is nothing wrong, according to the Bible, with pictures or symbols of Christ. What is wrong, according to the Bible, is what any object that represents the divine might begin to represent to us, what we allow that symbol to mean, importance we might give to it. The human tendency, which the 2nd commandment addresses, is to take the image/picture/symbol of the reality of God, and to begin to worship the image. We are then worshipping the created rather than the Creator. No picture of Christ, no cross which might hang around our neck, etc., should become the object of our prayers, worship or veneration.

It is not wrong to be reminded of the reality of God, and what he does and has

done for us, of his love for us, etc., with pictures, symbols, and the like. We must guard against allowing anything that is physical to replace the true reality of Jesus Christ.

In Christ,

Greg Albrecht
