Question: We are studying Matt. 24:45-51. I would like some background on the servant system of the Jews. Verse 45 says a faithful servant rules over his household to give them meat in due season. I know He is talking to the disciples, but how does this apply to me? I am not over other Christians. Thanks. Input on this whole section would help.

Answer: Dear Patricia,
First this is a parable. It is important to remember characteristics of parables (we identify some in our booklet "Understanding the Word") in which we note, "Parables bring out a spiritual truth by recounting a fictional story that remains essentially true to the experiences of everyday life often including something that is out of the ordinary."
In this parable we see that the good servant is always prepared for the Lord, and is faithful while the wicked servant is just the opposite. The servant (or slave) in the parable is the head over all domestic matters like a chief steward in his masters absence.
The parable does not seem only to apply to leaders who have similar responsibilities, but to all Christians that our responsibilities include good personal relationships, that we are faithful and patient, that we are not harsh, and that we do not "lord it over" others.
Hope this helps!
In Christ,
