Question:
Are there any biblical scriptural explanations about why we
use eggs for Easter?
David
Answer: Dear David,
The
egg is often used in anti-Easter material as a “proof” that Easter is wrong,
unbiblical, etc. It is true that
pagans have regarded the egg in a variety of ways, but logic tells us that
pagans ate food, drank water, etc., etc. That
doesn’t ipso facto, prove that we should not eat food or drink water.
Much
symbolism about the egg in the ancient world centered around new life.
New life, of course, is very much a Christian theme – as we read in
Romans 6, among other places. It
speaks to the relationship we can have with God because of the death, burial and
resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Because
eggs were associated with new life, it is only natural that Christians would
begin to use them as symbols of all that is biblical and true about the
celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ – in the spring of the year
when the cycle of nature bursts forth with new life.
Having
said that, we should also realize that things like chocolate eggs and bunny
rabbits can at best obscure, and at worst completely hide, the true meaning of
Easter. If such things get in the
way, then they should be discarded, for the real meaning of Easter is not in the
symbols that humans have adopted as a part of traditional celebration (the same
with Christmas and its Yule logs, trees, decorations, candles, etc.).
This
topic is addressed in some detail in a book we offer as a resource titled,
“Easter – is it Pagan?”
