Question:  Hi Greg,

I’ve been reading the Questions and Answers and find them to be quite enlightening.  I have a question that maybe you have already answered.  I was reading in Genesis and came across Genesis 1:26, “And God said, Let Us make man. . .”

It’s apparent that God was not alone, someone was with Him.  Who was it?

            Thanks,

            Bob

Answer:  Dear Bob,

We can view the “Let us. . .” of Genesis 1:26 several ways:

1.      Orthodox Christians believe that the entire record of scripture reveals that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – three separate but equal, co-essential but distinct persons.  This would be a reference to the Triune God.

2.      Some believe that this is a reference to God and the angels.

3.      The “us” is attributed to God as a form of a royal “we” – God is in fact speaking in the first person but to emphasize his deliberate intent he says “us”.

Any of these are within the Christian view – the truth may be that all of them apply to some degree.

            In Christ,

            Greg Albrecht
