Question:  Greg,

I have heard people speak about the seven “I AM” questions in regards to God being the “I AM”.  What are the seven questions, and where are they in the Bible?

            Thanks,

            Justin

Answer:  Dear Justin,

The seven “I AM” sayings are in the gospel of John – the “I AM” derives from Exodus, when God appeared to Moses in a burning bush and charged him with returning to Egypt, eventually to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt.  Moses asked God, “what is your name?  What shall I tell the nation of Israel?”  (Exodus 3:13).  The one true God identified him self as “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:14).

Jesus, the Son of God, the Alpha and Omega, without beginning and without end, identified himself to first century Jews as “I am” – specifically followed by a descriptor:

            1.  the bread of life   6:35

            2.  the light of the world   8:12; 9:5

            3.  the door (of the sheepfold)   10:7

            4.  the good shepherd   10:11, 14

            5.  the resurrection and the life   11:25

            6.  the way, the truth, and the life   14:6

            7.  the true vine   15:1

            In Christ,
