Question:  Dear Greg,

I’ve been reading Genesis 6:1-4 for a long time, but it’s just now that I’ve taken this seriously because we will be taking up Genesis 6:1-11 this Sunday in our Sunday school.

Did the fallen angels really marry and have children with human females?  How could this be?

            Vienna

Answer:  Dear Vienna,

The Bible tells us that angels are spirits (Hebrews 1:14).  They are not flesh like humans.  As created spirits, angels do not reproduce sexually or by any other means (see Luke 20:34-36, Matthew 22:30, and Mark 12:25).

The “sons of God” mentioned in Genesis 6:1-4 are probably male human beings.  These specific sons of God might be great men of old; mighty warriors who were regarded as heroes much like sports stars are today.  Some scholars believe that these sons of God were offspring of the line of Seth (out of whom the redeemer was to come—see Genesis 4:26).

The subject of Genesis 6 is physical human beings—not angels.

            In Christ,
