Question:  Dear Greg,

When Jesus mentions the Abomination of Desolation in Matthew 24, is he implying a Temple will be standing and in use during the tribulation?  I have heard it explained in two ways—that he was making reference to the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD, and also that there will be a third temple built.  Also, what are your thoughts on an actual Antichrist coming into power?

            Thanks,

            Jeff

Answer:  Dear Jeff,

This passage, as you suggest, can be viewed two ways:

1.      The temple was destroyed in 69-70 AD—the prophecy was fulfilled.

2.      It will also be fulfilled in the future.

Those who generally accept a biblical method of interpretation called dispensationalism (see “search our site” for more information on dispensationalism) as well as a pre-millennial view of prophecy in general favor the idea of a third temple, an Antichrist to come who is a human being, etc.  This may be one idea, but certainly not the only view, and interestingly, not the primary view of Christians down through time.  You may wish to read the article in the July-August 2001 Plain Truth titled, “Left Behind”—it is posted on our web site.

            In Christ,
