Question:
Dear Greg,
Thank
you for this opportunity. Can you please tell me about a guy in the Bible named
“Nimrod”? I would specifically
like to know, was he the first ruler or King in the book of Genesis?
Was he the guy who caused the people to “try” to build a tower all
the way to the kingdom of God?
Chuck
Answer: Dear Chuck,
Most
of what is and has been written about Nimrod is supposition and speculation.
The Bible tells us very little. He
was a son of Cush (Genesis 10:8-10). He
was a hunter. He was the father and
founder of Nineveh (Genesis 10:11). His
role, if any, at the tower of Babel, is supposition at best.
His name, or variations of his name, is found in ancient literature—and
as a result, speculation about a connection with the Nimrod mentioned in Genesis
10 have resulted. Some have
assigned him a central role in paganism and polytheism, again, not supported
biblically.
In
Christ,
Greg
