Question:
Dear Greg,
A
Christian friend of mine asked if it is appropriate to play musical instruments
in church. He said the Bible (the
New Testament) does not give examples of playing musical instruments.
Is it wrong to play musical instruments in the church?
Karlene
Answer: Dear Karlene,
It
is not wrong to play musical instruments in church.
If a denomination wishes to avoid musical instruments, they certainly are
within their rights because God does not impose, by command, music in our
worship. On the other hand, no Christian should attempt to tell
another that it is “wrong” or a “sin” to use musical instruments in
worship. The fact that there is no
apparent overt use of musical instruments in the New Testament proves
nothing—this is what is commonly called the “argument from silence.”
The Bible does not tell us that we should or should not drive cars, eat
or not eat fast food, play or not play card games, use vitamins, prescription
pills, fly in airplanes, etc., etc. The
list is endless.
Hope
this helps.
In
Christ,
Greg
