Question:
Greg,
How
would you answer someone who questions whether or not the Bible is the true Word
of God? What if we are wrong and
others such as Muslims and Mormons with their holy books are correct?
I am secure in my belief that the Bible is the true inspired Word of God,
but how can I articulate that to someone else?
Larry
Answer: Dear Larry,
In
brief, no other book that purports to be a holy book has been subjected to the
rigorous examination given to the Bible. The
Bible is true and accurate history, for it withstands all tests of
historiography with which historians decide fact from fiction.
The Bible, by those tests, is just as true as the existence of Socrates,
Thomas Aquinas, the Norman invasion of England, the Magna Carta, etc., etc. The Bible is remarkably consistent. Although it was written by many authors over a several
thousand-year time span (with most authors unable to consult with each other or
each other’s product), yet they are in agreement. Fulfilled prophecy is a major proof of the Bible.
For those who decide that the Bible is flawed or erroneous, I would say
the onus is on them to disprove it. The
record is that the veracity of the Bible not only still stands, but also has
been reinforced, having taken the best “shots/hits” of informed skeptics,
especially over the past 200 years. A
big subject, that’s my brief summary.
In
Christ,
Greg
