Question:
Dear
Greg,
I recently refinanced my home.
If I follow the 10% tithe, would I tithe on this whole amount or something
different? Would this be considered
income?
Thanks,
Tom
Answer:
Dear
Tom,
We have a number of questions posted here on our web site about the idea
that tithing is something commanded or required of Christians, and we address
that subject in our booklet, “Facing Your Financial Problems” (we’ll be happy
to send you a free copy).
In brief, tithing is a word that specifically refers to the old covenant
requirement of giving God an exact 10% of one’s increase—and according to the
old covenant there are ways of defining an increase.
Many interpreters and commentators add to those views as to what constitutes
an “increase”. For example, some
argue whether one is required to tithe on one’s gross or take home pay.
However, the bottom line for Christians is that this discussion is completely
irrelevant. Under the new covenant
there is no exact and precise percentage of income required.
Neither are there specific definitions about what is to be tithed upon
and what is exempt. Christians
are not required to tithe in the old covenant sense.
Some Christians use the word tithe to refer to those freely given donations
and offerings they give to their church and the ministries they support.
Such a generic use is fine as long as no old covenant baggage or definitions
are attached. This does not mean
Christians do not give. In fact,
when one examines the call to follow Christ and to be a steward of our time,
talents and treasures for God’s work on earth, giving is very much a part of
a Christian’s life. However, each
one of us decides what we give—when, how much, etc.
No minister, church, ministry leader or other Christian has any right
to obligate us to a specific amount or percentage. They can and should remind
us to give, to be cheerful and generous givers.
Beyond that there is no warrant for obligating Christians to specifics.
That is the clear message of the new covenant.
If you would like more information, please let me know.
We would be happy to send you our free booklet as well.
Thanks for allowing us to be of help to you.
In Christ,
Greg Albrecht
