Question: Dear Greg,

Are there scriptures that show that the Sabbath was not in force from Genesis to the giving of the law? There’s a verse in Romans 5 about sin being in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Is that a verse that would support this argument?

Thanks,

Joe

Answer: Dear Joe,

This is like saying, “was the American Declaration of Independence ‘in force’ during the Reformation, or when the Normans conquered England?” There is no onus to try to prove that a seventh day Sabbath was “in force” (whatever that might mean) before the Law of Moses—Sinai. That is not the operative question for Christians. In fact, it can lead Christians on a long detour, away from the cross of Christ. The operative question is “what should Christians do now, today, since the cross, after the cross of Christ?”

To your specific question—there is absolutely no way, apart from torturing and abusing the Bible, to prove that the seventh day Sabbath was “in force” before Sinai. The Sinai covenant was made/given at Sinai.

In Christ,
