Question:  Dear Greg,

I have read your answer to a person who asked about interracial marriage.  You do not quote scripture to back up your answer.  I want some scriptures!  Why do you allow interracial marriage?  I see nothing wrong with being friends with people of other races, but marriage…I can’t help but remember what God told people in the Old Testament.  Where does God say we can intermarry or not?  Please answer me, I need to know.  This isn’t just a thought, but IMPORTANT TO ME.

Answer:  Anonymous,

Why do we “allow” interracial marriage?  Simple answer—because the Bible says nothing about it which would instruct Christians not to do so.  You say that you can’t help remember what God told people in the Old Testament.  Great.  That’s good, but we are not Jews and we are not living under the old covenant.

Are you saying that Christians should not intermarry with another race because the Jews of the old covenant were not able to?  If this is the case then we must obey and follow the entire old covenant, not just part of it.  We must keep kosher, keep Shabbat, keep Jewish holy days, etc.

The cross of Christ changed everything.  The new covenant does not racially discriminate in terms of the people of God.  The new people of God, called Christians, are under the new covenant.  God, we are told, is no respecter of persons.  We are all one in Christ.  Why don’t I give you Scriptures?  Where do I start?  I give you the New Testament.  I give you Romans, Hebrews, Galatians, the book of Acts and the early history of the church when there was a battle about racism—you can read how that turned out.

I can’t accept the premise of your question—that is, show me why (with Scriptures) we may racially intermarry.  As a Christian, I respond—show me why not?

            Hope this helps.

            In Christ,

            Greg Albrecht
