Question:  Dear Greg,

I have a friend that believes that some of the old covenant was transferred to the new—such as the Sabbath, holy days, tithing, food laws, etc.  What specific scripture or scriptures would you use to explain this not to be true?

            Joe

Answer:  Dear Joe,

Your friend’s allegation is without any biblical proof.  It would be like you asking me, “I have a friend who says that the earth is flat.  How can I explain to him that it isn’t?”  In such a case your “flat-earth friend” is holding his or her belief in spite of all evidence.  It would seem that your friend about whom this question is directed is holding his or her beliefs for extra-biblical reasons, accepting authority beyond the Bible for his or her assertions.  There is nothing in the Bible that remotely suggests a transfer of “some” of the old covenant, nor is there any criteria given to guide us in the selection of which parts of the old covenant “transfer” and which do not.  The claim is biblically bogus.

You wish to discuss this with him?  I suggest that the onus is not upon you in the face of such a wild assertion.  He must provide support of his assertions, rather than you feeling that you must disclaim them.

Thank you for allowing PTM to be of service and provide spiritual direction and nourishment to you.

            In Christ,

            Greg Albrecht
