Question:  Dear Greg,

I had a question about a passage in the Bible.  1 John 5:16—what does it mean by a “sin leading to death” and when it says, “I am not saying that he should pray about that”?  That is a bit confusing.

            Thanks,

            Brett

Answer:  Dear Brett,

You’re right!  1 John 5:16 is a little confusing, and there are several possible meanings:

1.      Some believe that categories of sin are being referred to.  Catholics, for example, have long believed in mortal and venial sins.  However, other passages in the Bible contradict categories of sin.  Sin is sin according to Scripture.

2.      Some see that this sin is the kind of sin that leads to immediate physical death—breaking laws of gravity, health, etc., as opposed to “spiritual” issues.

3.      Others see John alluding to the differences between deliberate and willful sin versus unintentional sin.

4.      Others, given the context of the heresy John is combating, see John talking about an apostasy—those leaving the faith given “once and for all” to follow heresy.  This sin would lead to death if it falls within the category of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Matthew and Luke 12)—knowing and willful disregard of God’s offer to forgive all who repent, unconditionally.

The best answer probably is a combination of points #3 and #4.  Hope this helps.

            In Christ,

            Greg Albrecht
