Question:   Dear Greg,

How did the term “Ten Commandments” come to fruition?  Wasn’t Moses on the mountain getting the law as well as the first four books of the Bible?

            Anthony

Answer:  Dear Anthony,

The Ten Commandments are called the “ten words” in Hebrew and they became, in their Greek equivalent, the Decalogue—the ten.  There is no indication that Moses received the Pentateuch, the first four books while he was on Sinai.  Much of the history recorded in the Pentateuch had not yet occurred.  The Ten Commandments must be interpreted within the context of the old covenant, for they are very much a part of it.  They were part of the civil and religious code of the theocratic nation of Israel .

            In Christ,
