Question:
Dear
Greg
,
Does
not the Bible say that salvation is unconditional?
If we have to repent or ask for salvation that seems to be a condition
for salvation. If salvation is
unconditional, then we can do whatever we want, good or bad, because we are
sinners and therefore forgiven. Explain,
please.
Robert
Answer: Dear Robert,
1.
Salvation is unconditional.
It’s unconditional of any meritorious deeds that we
perform that earn salvation.
2.
Unconditional is not the same as automatic.
Salvation is not conferred because
we are born, or upon our 12th birthday, or whether we ask for it or
not. Salvation is unconditional, not
automatic—that is to say, not universal.
3.
We are free to accept or reject God’s gracious
offer of salvation. The Bible
is
clear about that choice.
4.
Your final statement about salvation—that “we can
do whatever we want
good
or bad” and be forgiven is true. If
we are in Christ, if we have been granted salvation by God’s grace, we have
been given eternal life. We are
given that salvation and eternal life because of Jesus’ perfect righteousness,
not our own. We do not earn the
right to receive salvation, nor do we have to qualify to maintain it.
If we have accepted salvation, we are given salvation.
However, we must repent, unconditionally surrender to God and accept
Jesus Christ alone as our personal Savior. Salvation
is not our way; it is God’s way—God’s way or no way—and God’s way does
not include any of our merits making a contribution to paying the bill.
Thanks
for allowing us to be of service.
In
Christ,
Greg
