Question:
Dear Greg,
Do
you ascribe to the traditionalist view of the Pentateuch or the Documentary
Hypothesis? Though there are minor
problems with the Traditionalist View, the Documentary Hypothesis would seem to
indicate less reliance on God-inspired authorship in favor of re-writes by
numerous people. I would be very
interested in your opinion.
Thanks,
and may God continue to bless Plain Truth Ministries.
In
Christ’s name,
Alex
Answer: Dear Alex,
Neither
view, in my opinion, necessarily diminishes from the fact that what we have is
what God inspired and what he caused to be part of the canon of Scripture.
Both views may have extreme positions that their advocates take, making
them untenable to those who believe that the Bible is the inspired word of
God— which you and I believe. An
elementary documentary hypothesis can, and often does, include the fact that God
inspired the human author— and often inspired that human author/editor to use
human sources (see Luke 1:1-4). Of
course you are probably referring to the perspective taken by many who favor the
documentary hypotheses, which is simply that there is no divine author and that
all of what we read in these five books has a human explanation and origin.
I reject that on its face, for it is not in line with the internal claims
of the Bible.
In
Christ,
Greg
