Question:  Greg,

I would like to make sure I understand brokenness.  I think it means to give up of myself and do the will of God, but I’m not sure.  Can you explain brokenness to me in a simplified manner?

            Thank you,

            Nancy

Answer:  Dear Nancy ,

The state of being broken implies surrender, repentance, dependence upon God, humility, and sacrifice of one’s personal agenda and desires.  It is the state of giving up what we would rather do for God’s higher good.

Caution—this state is between one and God.   We must be careful not to let some other human insist that we follow their exact and specific details about what being broken means.  Other humans can help us, direct us to Christ, etc., but we should be careful that we do not surrender to them, allowing them to prescribe specifics.  In so doing religion often manipulates, uses and abuses, and in the process it is possible that we lose the freedom in Christ (Galatians 5:1) given to us by God’s grace.

            In Christ,

            Greg Albrecht
