Question:  Dear Greg,

Is it wrong for a woman to wear makeup?  The church I started going to does not believe in it.  They say it is a sin.  According to them, so is wearing pants, cutting or styling your hair (anything other than dressing or wearing it like they do—in a bun).  If you do any of these things they say you are not saved.  I know I’m saved because I believe in Christ, but are these things sins in God’s eyes?

Answer:  Dear Gina,

There is nothing in the Bible that would remotely give anyone any authority to ask you—and certainly not demand of you—that you do not wear makeup or use cosmetics, that you never wear pants, style your hair, etc.  Nothing in the Bible suggests that God insists that men or women look haggard and bedraggled.  You are free in Christ (Galatians 5:1).  Do not let anyone, any church or any pastor take away what Christ has given you by his shed blood.  Jesus is our life.  He lives his resurrected live in us (Galatians 2:20).

            In Christ,

            Greg Albrecht
