Question:
Greg,
Is
it wrong to give more than 10% to God? Would
that mean I was under the law and under a curse?
I like giving more to God because he has done so much for me.
I just think it is a proper response.
Do you think that people will judge me as being under the law if I give
more than 10% to God?
Patrick
Answer: Dear Patrick,
There
is no minimum “cover charge” payment that we must provide to God, neither is
there a limit on what we may give to him. The
old covenant system of tithing gave a strict requirement of 10%, but the new
covenant in Christ goes beyond percentages.
We are asked to give as we can, as we are able, and as we have been
blessed, according to our heart. We
are asked to sacrifice for God’s kingdom so that his work may be done.
We are to give, not only of our monetary blessings and of our treasures,
but also of our time and talents.
We
have a number of questions on this topic in our booklet, “Facing Your
Financial Problems”. We will be
happy to send you the free booklet if you do not already have one.
