Question: .

Please recommend the best book for a college student (5th year in nuclear engineering) who has listened to all the scientific "mumbo-jumbo and is questioning the authenticity of the Bible. Is there a book that will relate/prove the Bible through science? I'm praying for my son.

Answer:

Big question. Important question. Perhaps one of the most important. So my answer is going to be inadequate, because of the limitations imposed by this medium (the internet), and because of the sheer scope of this question.

Here goes. I am going to suggest simplicity, rather than complexity. Why? Because your son, to get to his fifth year, has had the foundation of many earlier years of education and many teachers/professors. For me to jump in at an "upper" level would not be a tribute to your son's education in the engineering field, but rather almost certainly a tactical blunder on my part (assuming too much). So I don't think he will be offended or hurt by the simplicity of my recommendation.

Further, the issue is not simply the Bible - the issue is God. I understand, from your question, that your son has some background in Christianity, although it may not be a current priority with him. With that in mind I recommend two books, both by the same author:

Know What You Believe by Paul E. Little, Victor Publishing. He includes chapters on "The Bible", "God", "Jesus Christ", "Christ's Death", etc. The foreword of this book explains that Paul Little spent most of his ministry teaching, lecturing, and in conversations with college students.

Know Why You Believe by Paul E. Little, InterVarsity. In this book the emphasis, as the title suggests is not on "what" but "why". Sample chapter titles - "Is Christianity Rational?" "Is There a God?" "Is the Bible God's Word?" "Are the Bible Documents Reliable?" "Do Science and Scripture Agree?"

Once again this book is loaded with university and collegiate illustrations, stories, etc.

Both of these books are available through Plain Truth Ministries, $10 each, 1-800-309-4466. Or, you may purchase them or order them through a Christian bookstore.

Hoping this helps, may God bless you as you seek to help your son with the questions he is wrestling with.

In Christ,

Greg Albrecht
