Question: .

I have hang-ups on a number of doctrines. I need help with the doctrines of the Trinity, baptism, and eternal salvation. I know that this is a large order, but I honestly need to understand the truth in these areas. Can you help me out?

- David

Answer:

Dear David,

I will be delighted to give you some assistance - and will do so mostly in the form of recommending books.

The trinity --  I would recommend, Why You Should Believe in the Trinity, by Robert Bowman, Baker Books (Christian book stores can order this for you). This book is filled with answers to the standard proof texts and illogical conclusions that are typical of the teachings of Arius, an early heretic, whose teachings continue to be popular today in cultic teaching. His teachings, are modified and taught by sabbatarian groups and by the Jehovah's Witnesses, among others.

In addition, I would recommend Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis, as well as Your God is Too Small by J.B. Phillips. Great little books. These are available through Plain Truth Ministries (1-800-309-4466) - or a Christian bookstore can order them for you.

An elementary background of early Christian history, and why Christians believe what they believe is important. I would recommend Speaking as One by Scott Hoezee - CRC Publications as well as What Christians Believe - A Biblical and Historical Summary by Johnson and Webber, Zondervan - both of these books should be available through Christian book stores.

On general Christian doctrine and teaching I would recommend Know Why You Believe (Inter Varsity Press) by Paul Little, as well as his companion volume, Know What You Believe (Victor Books). The Complete Book of Bible Answers by Ron Rhodes (Harvest House) is an excellent resource (chapter 20 is titled "Eternal Security" and gives a good solid overview as does chapter 22 on the subject of baptism), as is Knowing Scripture by R. C. Sproul - these four books are all available through Plain Truth Ministries.

One more general book that is a great resource is Know the Truth by Bruce Milne - he discusses assurance (eternal security) as well as baptism - among many, many other issues. Milne's book is also available from Plain Truth Ministries.

I am not trying to sell books to you -- but we have selected and stocked many of these resources with people like you in mind. They are all available from Christian bookstores as well.

Thanks for allowing us to be of assistance to you - please let me know if there is anything else with which I can help you.

In Christ,

Greg Albrecht
