PTM WEEKLY UPDATE -- APRIL 14, 2008

Has my former pastor put a curse on me?

Q. First of all, you need to know that I am a new believer in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I wonder why so many bad things are happening to me and my family. Two years ago our pastor was being very authoritative and controlling. Many in our congregation investigated him and found some unethical practices on his part. The congregation fired the pastor and he moved. Since then, I have experienced an injury requiring surgery, a job loss, several friends and family have passed away -- all within two years after the pastor was dismissed. Is it possible for this pastor, or anyone, for that matter, to put a curse on me and my family? My wife tells me that I need to continue to grow my faith in Christ and that Christ is in control of the plan for our life. What do you say?

A.  I agree with your wife, generally, but I want to share some additional specific comments.

1) It seems to me that you may have, for whatever reason, been directed down a dead end road, in terms of your relationship with God. You seem to be interpreting events in your life as being God's displeasure about something you have done or failed to do.

2) Many people within Christendom find themselves in a spiritual environment where God is interpreted in a superstitious manner. Human beings, religious leaders or not, do not have the power to place curses on us (1 John 4:4).

3) The more probable explanation for negative events in your life, as they may relate to your former pastor's removal, is coincidence. You -- or someone else -- have decided to compare and contrast these negative events with your pastor's departure, in such a way to suggest a cause and effect relationship.

4) God is not a God of fear. He does not rule over us in some arbitrary, authoritative manner. God is love. He loves you beyond your wildest imagination. His love and grace toward you does not depend on the church you attend or used to attend, a former or current pastor, or how well you are obeying any number of religious rules and regulations. God's love toward you and in you will lead you, through the indwelling life of our risen Lord, to live a life which will bring glory to God -- but the things you do that will do so will be produced by Christ in you, not because you fall into line with religion.

5) So yes, as your wife says, you need to turn your focus on Christ -- to his cross -- and to all that he is and what he means to and for you. He is the Lord of your life -- not your former pastor, not someone who someone else may tell you can put a curse or hex on you. Rest in Christ alone. You will find peace in him.
