PTM WEEKLY UPDATE -- SEPTERMBER 8, 2008
What in the world is a "prayer warrior"?
Q. What do you think about having a prayer warrior pray during our worship service?
A. I am not fond of this term -- a special designation for a type of prayer, or a type of person doing the prayer -- which carries a value judgment about the supposed effectiveness of the person doing so (as opposed to the person who is not so engaged). The term "prayer warrior" suggests, it seems to me, that there are those who are better at prayer than others -- and thus the use of this term can introduce the concept of a professional class of individuals who pray -- or if not professional, at least semi-professional.
Q2. The reason I ask this question is that our pastor suggested that we should have a prayer warrior praying during our worship service. Is this necessary?
A2. I am not certain about the problems or issues that may motivate your pastor to make this suggestion. Again, I for one see no need for prayer warriors -- I believe that God listens to us all, whether some human pins a medal on us, puts a patch on our sleeve and proclaims us a prayer warrior -- or whether we just simply pray, without some huge title about our so-called prayer abilities. Is it a good idea to pray? Yes. Is it a good idea to pray during church services? Yes, you bet. In fact, given some of the stuff that happens during services in some churches, I would say that it's an important time to pray!
