Better Than a Map – by Bermie Dizon

As my brother and I embarked on our journey to El Nido, Palawan, the Philippines, I felt a surge of excitement. Consulting Google for insights, I eagerly studied the city map, discovering that our hotel was conveniently located near colorful stores, tantalizing restaurants, and just a stone’s throw away from the breathtaking beach!

On our second day, at around 7 pm when the sky was dark, we decided to immerse ourselves fully in the experience of being tourists. The bustling streets welcomed us with a multitude of visitors from mostly European nations.
As we strolled along the main thoroughfare, a radiant glow caught my eye on a side street to our left. Intrigued, we ventured forth, finding ourselves amidst a culinary wonderland! Of course, for me as a foodie, that was a great discovery.

The entire street was transformed into a bustling gastronomic paradise, illuminated by twinkling lights and filled with the savory aroma of freshly grilled seafood—fish whose names I don’t even know. It was a feast for the senses, and without hesitation, we indulged in its delights for two consecutive evenings.

Reflecting on this unexpected discovery, I realized a profound truth: while maps may guide us, they can never fully capture the essence of a place. Streets may close, intersections may alter, but it is through firsthand experience of walking the streets that we truly grasp the heartbeat of a city.

In much the same way, life unfolds beyond the confines of our initial plans and expectations. Like a map, our beliefs and ideologies may offer guidance, but they are mere interpretations of reality. True understanding comes from embracing the unpredictability and richness of the journey itself.

In our spiritual quest, the Bible serves as our map, directing us to the ultimate truth—Jesus Christ. Yet, it is only through a personal encounter with Him that we uncover the depths of spiritual fulfillment. When we surrender to God’s presence within us, we unearth a paradise far greater than any earthly map can delineate—a paradise found in the transformative power of His love and grace.

Our journey through life and faith isn’t about simply following a map, but about engaging deeply with the experiences that shape us. As we encounter Christ personally, we are drawn into a relationship far richer than any set of instructions or plans could ever offer.
