God On Call? – Jim Fowler

Many of us have this unique ability to dissect life so easily. We declare that God, that Jesus is our All in All, and then we continue our daily lives as if we have placed God on the mantle or on a shelf as we go about our daily business. If God in Christ by the Spirit is our Life, how can we so easily and quickly dispense with the thought of His presence? Is this a case of moving from the conscious awareness of God to the subconscious awareness of God? Or is this a case of being a practical atheist who can pull God up into our consciousness when we recognize our inability? We do our best, and call on God to do the rest?

It is as if we regard God as our “servant boy,” and when we ring the bell, He will be standing in readiness to meet our every need. God is not our personal bellhop. God is not our “hired hand” or “a genie in the box.” But how do we maintain a continual consciousness of God in Christ by the Spirit? Is that even possible? When the Spirit of God the Father, Jesus the Christ, and God the Holy Spirit dwells in our human spirit, and we have been involved in the renewing of our human minds to align with the “mind of Christ” (I Cor. 2:16) within our spirit, there will be an “established attitude” cf. Prov. 16:3 of God’s presence.

Such spiritual awareness should allow for a mental and emotional awareness of the presence of God within as we go about our daily lives. This is not all that dissimilar from subconscious awareness and cognitive consciousness. We want to be aware that God is present all the time, being able to go about our daily tasks with the recognition that He is in us and empowering our action in all that we do. Early Christian writers spoke of a “continual God-consciousness,” and this would appear to be what they were speaking of. In the back of our minds and at the forefront of our thoughts, we are aware that God is not an external “God on call,” but internally present within us, and His fullness of Being and power are available in every circumstance of life.
