Les Miserables – “God Delights to Display His Mercy”

Mike Owens, a friend of Plain Truth Ministries, reminds us of this powerful scene from the 1978 cinematic version of Les Miserables. He reflects,

This scene is a microcosm of Post Resurrection Amazement, the same wonder Paul the Apostle experienced on the Damascus road. The same amazement the centurion experienced at the crucifixion when he exclaimed, “Truly this was the Son of God.” It was what Zacchaeus felt when Jesus entered his home and became his friend. The same awe overcame Thomas when Jesus invited him to touch His wounds.
Human hearts are not transformed by punishment or rebuke but by understanding, mercy and love. Behavior modification brought about by rules and fear is heartless and mechanical. Our hearts are only truly changed by mercy. And our God “delights to display his mercy” (Micah 7:18)!
