What Is Your Theology? – Jim Fowler

This is a question that I have been asked on more than one occasion. Sometimes they are seeking to know my “statement of faith” in ministry or church, or on the website. Sometimes they are wanting to know where I was educated, thinking that thereby they can figure out my theology, but I am a nonconformist and the institutions where I studied do not represent my theology. Sometimes, they are asking the wrong question because they ask, “what is your religious preference?” To that question, I respond with “none!” because religion and theology are two different categories of consideration.

“Do you subscribe to a Baptist theology? No! Do you subscribe to Restoration Movement theology? No! Do you subscribe to Presbyterian theology? No! Do you subscribe to Anglican theology? No! Do you subscribe to Roman Catholic theology? No! Do you subscribe to Pentecostal theology? No, none of these and many more! Those are religious and denominational labels and do not begin to describe my consideration (logos) of God (Theos) and all that the Triune God has accomplished in the incarnational action of Jesus, His life, death, resurrection, and Pentecostal outpouring to bring the Spirit of Christ (cf. II Cor. 3:17,18), the presence of the Triune God into the lives of receptive people of faith.

So, “what is your theology?” My theology is simple – one word simple – JESUS. “But Jesus was an historical person, not a theology,” some might object. Yes, Jesus was an historical Person, but in His resurrection, He became the eternal Spirit presence of the Triune God to dwell within human spirits and to be divine Life in mankind. As the living Lord Jesus, He has become my life (cf. Col. 3:4) and the life of God in all Christ-ones, He is my consideration of God, my theology. Some want to pin it down in more detail and explanation, but I do not care (nor do I intend) to go there. I am content to maintain that JESUS is my Savior, my Lord, my Life, my theology, and my “all in all” (cf. Eph. 1:23).
