We Don’t Need Perfect Mothers – by Rachel Ramer
When my sisters and I face relationship challenges, we occasionally say to each other, “What would Mom have done? Let’s not do that.” This may seem disrespectful, casting our mother as a horrible role model, but the truth is, we sympathize with the struggles she faced and how she dealt with them. She grew up in a world where females were openly taught to acquiesce to the will of the men in their lives. The church, the workplace and the home all reinforced this. Society taught her not to stand up for her own needs, and she passed this tendency on to her daughters. We struggled to dismantle this message for ourselves.

Tender Mercies: “Mothers Day Cards” – by Ruth A. Tucker
Bless the Lord who crowns you with tender mercies (Psalm 103, NKJV).
One of my favorite short stories is “Mothers Day” by Octavus Roy Cohen. It was Saturday night, the eve of Mothers Day. Dan Clancy “neither knew nor cared.” He was a police detective, “square shouldered” who “thought only of himself.” But on this particular night his thoughts were on a “narrow-shouldered and furtive” drifter, “a sneak-thief” hiding under the freight cars. Of course, Dan could have picked him up willy-nilly as a vagrant and seen to it that the man received sixty or ninety days in the workhouse. But there was little pleasure in that. It ...
Love and Suffering – Part 2
Discover an answer for your own pain and suffering, and that experienced by our loved ones, when it intersects with the love and suffering Jesus demonstrated and endured for us.
Love and Suffering – Part 1
We celebrate Mother's Day by considering the contrast Paul provides between Hagar, the slave woman, and Sarah, the free woman. We study human love and suffering from a Christ-centered perspective.
Here Is Your Mother
Celebrate Mother’s Day in the context of the love and admiration Jesus had for his mother.
Giving Birth – by Greg Albrecht
Friend and Partner Letter - May 2025:
When we ponder the crucifixion of Jesus, we seldom think of his death on his Cross as a symbol of birthing, much like that of a woman in the travail and labor of childbirth. We do speak of Jesus’ work on the Cross – that is, his labor.
Giving birth is not passive – it is active work. Mothers suffer pain, even risking their own lives, to bring forth a new life. Water and blood were part of the work on the Cross, just as they are part of the birth event for a woman who becomes a mother.
The night before he was crucified, five chapters in the Gospel of John (13-17) Jesus eating with his disciples, ...

Jars of Clay…and Mothers
As we celebrate mothers, we explore the nature of God. We learn that it is the very nature of God to place his grace in places thought to be humanly improbable or impossible.

You Are Loved – by Greg Albrecht
This week is Mother's Day here in North America, and we extend a huge thank-you to all mothers, as we celebrate their role in our lives. Having said that, in the midst of all our Mother's Day celebrations we should remember that the outward trappings of Mother's Day often overwhelm the spiritual elements. Phone calls and greeting cards and flowers and lunches and gifts have come to be an expected part of observing this special time.
But sometimes grown children, free from the prompting of teachers at school or reminders from their fathers, can forget to call or send a card. Sometimes grown children resent their mothers, for one reason or another, ...
God and Mothers
While there is no greater physical place of ministry, position or power than that of a mother, we can learn a great deal about our heavenly Father as we honor our earthly mothers.

The Creator and His Assistants
Mothers ARE God’s life giving assistants. This is a day to honor our Mothers and all who have helped us along the way. It’s also a time to remember those who assist God as he re-births people as children of God.

My Two “Moms” by Laura Urista
My mom, Charlotte Jean (“Jeannie” to those closest to her) passed away nearly eleven years ago. If she had lived, she would have celebrated her 97th birthday a few months ago. My mother-in-law, Teresa, would have been 90 years old this year. But as I write this, she died nearly two years ago.
As I think about my two “moms”—these two wonderful matriarchs I was blessed to have in my life—I am struck by the stark contrast in my unique relationships with each of them.
“Jeannie”
My mom and I had what would be considered a fairly close relationship, but like many mothers and daughters, we excelled at “pushing each other’s ...

A Mother’s Legacy
Join us as we give thanks for mothers and the critical role they play in the lives of their children.
You Are Loved!
While we may often think of biblical examples where the picture of a human father is used to explain God's love, maternal examples used in the Bible are equally important. Join us for Mother's Day as we place the spotlight on God's unconditional love for all humanity.
The Mother Side of God – by Greg Albrecht
Friend and Partner Letter from May 2023
We all have an intimate relationship with mothers – we are sons and daughters of mothers and grandchildren of grandmothers. We are husbands whose wives were/are mothers. We are parents of daughters and even granddaughters some of whom are themselves mothers.
Breaking news! Remember, you heard it here first!! It’s obvious, I know, but for the record, let’s remember we all had a mother. Some are blessed to still have a living mother… if you do, take advantage of the time you have with her. Many of you are mothers, may you hear and know that you are cherished and loved by your children.
Mothers are ...
