Christ-centered faith vs Christless religion/spirituality – Brad Jersak

Lately, I’ve been noticing subtle differences between the popular ‘spirituality vs. religion’ and ‘faith vs. religion' Some prefer ‘spirituality’ because it only implies one’s own spiritual self or soul (sans any god at all). So hiking the mountains is ‘spiritual’ because it nurtures the soul. True enough. However,  I personally prefer to speak of ‘faith’ because my spiritual self or my soul has been freed and fed by a Love greater than my own … and indeed, faith freed me from religion in a way that spirituality hadn’t. As one Orthodox priest says, ‘Religion is a neurological disease and faith is its cure.’ I’m ...

10 reasons why the cross is the perfect symbol for Christian deconstruction – David Hayward

My deconstruction. I not only documented my own deconstruction in my graphic devotional book, The Liberation of Sophia, but I also launched The Lasting Supper where we help each other through the deconstructive process and find fellowship in the process. The cross is an important Christian symbol. But for me it is more than that. It has become an important human symbol. For me, it symbolizes deconstruction. Why do I say that? It destroys human theology. It frustrates ambition. It throws God into question. It demands a kind of total death. It exposes raw human existence. It challenges the status quo. It mocks magical ...

10 Questions Churches Can Ask Themselves About Spiritual Abuse – David Hayward

Did you know the purpose of the law is to protect the rights of the individual? Therefore, I think it is important for churches to establish at least unwritten laws concerning the way it treats its individuals. In any relationship, those involved need to constantly check to ensure that they are treating the other fairly, compassionately, and justly. This includes churches. I’ve come to believe that all churches are prone to spiritual abuse. In fact, I claim that the abuse of people is the gravitational pull of all institutions and organizations. So we must be diligent to ensure that they don’t go there. I’ve assembled 10 questions the ...

The Importance of Being Creative During Deconstruction – David Hayward

Alone But Not Lonely - by Nakedpastor David Hayward Making art was an important part of my healing and reconstruction process. I didn’t know this at the beginning of my deconstruction. It didn’t know this consciously after I’d left the ministry and the church. In fact, it wasn’t until I published my new book, The Liberation of Sophia, that I realized making art helped save me. It was the week after I left the church when I drew my first Sophia drawing. The one with the bear. The inspiration to draw her was unstoppable. It was four years later when I drew my last one. The inspiration to draw her stopped. It was ...
